Tips For Larger-Looking Windows

  • Start by extending drapery hardware beyond the edges of the window frame. When you use drapes or curtains, this helps avoid stack back from interfering with your view. When your window treatments are wider than the window, it tricks your mind into thinking all the space behind the drapes is glass.
  • Choose a sturdy drape or shade fabric. A heavier fabric will not only look more high-end, but it will also do a better job of hiding walls when using the window-width trick. Flimsy fabric will not hang as well and will draw attention to the space between the rod and curtain, which is not ideal.
  • Use drapes from ceiling to floor and wall to wall between windows to dupe you into thinking your windows are massive. Covering the excess space makes it unclear where the walls end and your windows begin, which works in your favor.
  • Frame the frame. Yes, you read that right. Drawing more attention to the area around the window with a border allows the window itself to make more of a statement in the room. Feel free to let creativity be your guide. You can use wallpaper, paint, or a combination of the two.
  • Don’t allow your windows to fade into the abyss, especially if your frames are white. Using a darker, cool color for the walls surrounding windows makes them pop. Another option is to paint the trim in a white room a slightly darker hue, like a deep beige.
  • Get playful with patterns. Vertical patterns, like classic stripes, will draw the eye upward, while horizontal patterns enhance width.
  • Using texture is another trick designers keep up their sleeves. Cellular shades or woven window coverings are an excellent way to place texture around windows. Anything that increases depth or visual interest helps you to fake fabulous windows. Movement creates a sense of space. Think of a small room. It feels larger if your eyes have to run around the perimeter several times.
  • Bold, vibrant window treatments make it effortless to fake endless windows. Design Studio™ Side Panels & Drapery and Design Studio™ Roman Shades offer a wide selection of prints and colors to make your windows stand out. Placing a custom top treatment on a window will also make it a focal point in a room.
