Blinds are More Cost-Effective than Curtains

Uncovered windows leave the inside of your home open to the gazes of anyone who walks or drives past. If you don’t want to feel like you’re on display, window treatments are non-negotiable. Maybe you’re planning to sell soon and don’t want to invest in expensive coverings, or perhaps you’re working with a tight budget. Either way, you’ve likely paired your choices down to curtains and blinds. We break down which offer the best benefits to consider when choosing curtains or blinds.

Blinds Are More Cost-Effective

You may assume curtains are more cost-effective, but they tend to run much more than blinds. Not only do curtains require the purchase of hardware, whereas blinds have it included, curtains are also far less durable. You will need to replace curtains around every three years. Blinds will last twice as long and even longer if you take great care of them. Curtains come into contact with your hands a lot more often than the slats of blinds, making them more susceptible to staining and tearing.

Breaking Down Types of Blinds

Specific blinds will cost less than others. If you’re willing to go with faux wood or cellular shades, you’ll save more than if you want authentic hardwood. Also, keep in mind the price of whatever blinds you choose will increase with the size of the windows being dressed. If you are purchasing blinds for an unusually shaped window, you’ll need a custom set which will cost more.

Other Considerations

  1. Light Control: Blinds offer significantly more variable light control than curtains, as you can adjust the slats of blinds. To have the same amount of light control with curtains, you generally need to layer a set of sheer panels with opaque panels, which increases the cost.
  2. Mold and Mildew Resistance: Any variety of fabric window treatment, including curtains or shades, will not be as mold or mildew resistant as faux wood or aluminum blinds. You should take special care if the windows are in a damp area such as a basement or bathroom.
  3. Insulation: If soundproofing and insulation are what you need, curtains are the better choice. Thicker fabrics will provide superior insulation and sound reduction and trap warm air in the summer. You may want to opt for blinds if your home is in a warmer climate.
